Indiana Health Commissioner Dr. Jerome Adams Sworn in as 20th U.S. Surgeon General

Washington, DC, September 6, 2017 — In being sworn in on Tuesday as the nation’s 20th surgeon general, Jerome Adams, M.D., said his motto will be “Better health through better partnerships.”

That’s something Indiana’s former health commissioner said he learned from Vice President Pence, the man who administered Adams’ oath of office Tuesday, three years after having appointed Adams to the state job while serving as Indiana’s governor.

Dr. Adams replaces Sylvia Trent-Adams, who has been acting surgeon general since Mr. Trump ousted Dr. Vivek Murthy, a holdover from the Obama administration. Continue reading

Trump Nominates Indiana Health Commissioner Dr. Jerome Adams as Surgeon General

Washington, DC, July 7, 2017 — President Donald J. Trump has nominated Dr. Jerome M. Adams, the health commissioner for Indiana and a strong advocate of needle exchanges to avoid the spread of disease, to be the surgeon general of the United States.

Dr. Adams would replace Sylvia Trent-Adams, who has been acting surgeon general since Mr. Trump ousted Dr. Vivek Murthy, a holdover from the Obama administration.

The surgeon general is often called “the nation’s doctor,” and works to improve public health. The surgeon general also oversees the 6,700 public health officers, many of whom work in underserved areas. Continue reading

Trump Administration Fires Surgeon General Vivek Murthy

Washington, DC, April 24, 2017 — Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, an Obama administration holdover, was asked to resign by the Trump administration on Friday.  Dr. Murthy’s wife, Alice Chen, said on Saturday that her husband had refused to resign and was fired.

Dr. Murthy was replaced by his deputy, Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams, one of the first nurses to serve as surgeon general, who will for now be in an acting role. Continue reading

Washington, DC, November 18, 2016 — A new Surgeon General’s report released on November 16 finds alcohol and drug misuse and severe substance use disorders, commonly called addiction, to be one of America’s most pressing public health concerns.

Nearly 21 million Americans — more than the number of people who have all cancers combined — suffer from substance use disorders.

The new report, Facing Addiction in America: The Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health, marks the first time a U.S. Surgeon General has dedicated a report to substance misuse and related disorders. Continue reading
