The NJLSVA was founded to educate suppliers on trends in industry procurement and public policy that affects the life sciences industry.

Montclair State Receives Official Designation as Public Research University; Fourth State University with Research Designation

Montclair, NJ, July 26, 2017 — On July 21, Governor Chris Christie signed legislation designating Montclair State University as a public research university.

New Jersey now has four public research universities: Montclair State, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Rowan and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Already classified by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as a research doctoral institution, and classified by the New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education as a doctoral degree-granting institution, this latest acknowledgement formally recognizes the very substantial transformation that has occurred in recent years at New Jersey’s second largest university. Montclair State University to Award Honorary Doctorate to ADP’s Carlos Rodriguez at Graduate School Commencement

Montclair, NJ, May 2, 2017 — The Montclair State University Board of Trustees has named Carlos Rodriguez, the president and CEO of Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP), as the honorary degree recipient for its May 2017 Graduate School Commencement ceremony.

The Cuban-American business leader and philanthropist will deliver the keynote address and receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the event on May 22 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, N.J.

Montclair State University Professor Pankaj Lal Receives Prestigious Presidential Award

Montclair, NJ, February 1, 2017 — Pankaj Lal, associate professor of Earth and Environmental Studies and associate director of the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies at Montclair State University, is among 102 recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE)

Nine Colleges and Universities Establish the New Jersey Big Data Alliance

Data finger touchNew Brunswick, NJ, January 19, 2017 — Andrew Sheldon reports on NJBIZ that nine of the state’s top colleges and universities have signed a memorandum of agreement to formally establish the New Jersey Big Data Alliance (NJBDA).

The aim of the NJBDA is to bring together the diverse advanced cyberinfrastructure resources and talent housed at the state’s universities, colleges and NJEDge.Net, according to a news release.

Margaret Brennan-Tonetta, associate vice president for economic development at Rutgers and a founder of the NJBDA, said the agreement was a step toward making the Garden State a leader in an emerging field. Continue reading

NJ Senate Honors Montclair State University for Achieving Research Doctoral Carnegie Designation

Montclair State U squareMontclair, NJ, June 14, 2016 ― The 40 members of the Senate of the State of New Jersey on May 9 issued a resolution in which Montclair State University was recognized and honored for earning Research Doctoral University designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education for the first time.

The change in ranking was issued by Carnegie in January 2016, based on the substantial growth at Montclair State in doctoral-level education and research activity.  The University was previously recognized as a Master’s 1 University (Larger Programs). Continue reading

PSEG Institute Launches Green Teams; Transdisciplinary Student Teams Begin Summer Program to Help NJ Businesses

Green 2Montclair, NJ, June 13, 2016 ― The PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies (PSEG ISS) at Montclair State University welcomed the members of its new Green Teams pilot program for a special event on May 31 to mark the beginning of an initiative that features select graduate and undergraduate students and some of New Jersey’s leading corporations.

Held in the University’s new Center for Environmental Life Sciences, the morning program brought together the 35 undergraduate and three graduate students who will be participating in the 10-week program, which allows transdisciplinary teams to work together to aid New Jersey businesses in solving sustainability problems.

As part of a PSEG ISS Green Team, students will have the ability to gain business connections and interact with local community members, while gaining experience in applied science and improving their abilities to work within a team. Continue reading

New Jersey Business Publishes ‘Innovation Ecosystem’ Special Supplement; Highlights Academic-Industry Collaborations

The supplement includes profiles of Montclair State University, Rowan University, Rutgers University and Stevens Institute of Technology.

In the report’s introductory letter, New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education Rochelle Hendricks wrote, “Now, more than ever, our New Jersey colleges and universities are becoming fully engaged partners with business and industry.  Together, we are conducting exciting research, equipping students with industry-valued credentials and degrees, while driving innovation that will keep us competitive in the global economy.” Continue reading

Montclair State University Names Dean for New Nursing School

Montclair State U squareMontclair, NJ, April 30, 2016 ― Kelly Heyboer reports in The Record that, with demand surging for registered nurses with bachelor’s degrees, one of New Jersey’s largest universities is adding a new nursing school.

Montclair State University announced Wednesday it has appointed the founding dean of a new School of Nursing scheduled to open in the fall.

Janice Smolowitz, currently a senior director at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, will take office next month, university officials announced.

The nursing school will open in the fall with a “RN to BSN” degree program, which is designed for current registered nurses to earn a bachelor of science degree.  Other degree programs are scheduled to begin rolling out in 2017, campus officials said. Continue reading
