Montclair State University Researchers Receive NSF INCLUDES Award; Project to Develop Paths to STEM Success for Underrepresented Groups

Montclair, NJ, October 5, 2017 — Montclair State University researchers have received an NSF INCLUDES (Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science) grant to expand STEM opportunities for historically underrepresented low-income, minority and women students.

A two-year grant of $300,000 funds the NSF INCLUDES Design and Development Launch Pilot, “Sustainability Teams Empower and Amplify Membership in STEM” (S-TEAMS).

Nested within the University’s PSEG Institute of Sustainability Studies’ Green Teams program that is offered in partnership with New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability (NJHEPS). S-TEAMS will promote collaborative STEM change that increases diversity among public-private partners. Continue reading

U.S. News & World Report Ranks 8 New Jersey Colleges Among Best; Princeton Again No. 1

Newark, NJ, September 15, 2017 — Payton Guion reports in The Star-Ledger/NJ.com that New Jersey has eight colleges ranked among the top schools in the country, according to the 2018 list from U.S. News and World Report, up from seven that made the grade in last year’s rankings.

Rowan University is the newcomer of the N.J. schools that made the list, coming in at 171 after not being ranked last year.

Montclair State Receives Official Designation as Public Research University; Fourth State University with Research Designation

Montclair, NJ, September 12, 2017 — On July 21, Governor Chris Christie signed legislation designating Montclair State University as a public research university.

New Jersey now has four public research universities: Montclair State, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Rowan and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Already classified by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as a research doctoral institution, and classified by the New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education as a doctoral degree-granting institution, this latest acknowledgement formally recognizes the very substantial transformation that has occurred in recent years at New Jersey’s second largest university. Montclair State Designated ‘Public Research’ University; Readies Launch of $22 Million Computer Science Facility

Montclair, NJ, September 5, 2017 — Vince Calico reports in NJBIZ that Montclair State University, after being designated a Public Research University by Gov. Chris Christie in July, is preparing to launch a 40,000-square-foot computer science facility in the fall of 2018, and is setting its sights on other major expansion projects.

The school is on a roll in terms of academic prestige: Christie signed legislation July 21 giving Montclair State the Public Research University designation just one month after the college was ranked among the best schools for the money by Money Magazine.

In addition to the prestige, the new designation allows Montclair State to once again enter into public-private partnerships to construct new facilities and make financial aid available to hundreds of more students. Continue reading

Montclair State University to Award Honorary Doctorate to ADP’s Carlos Rodriguez at Graduate School Commencement

Montclair, NJ, May 2, 2017 — The Montclair State University Board of Trustees has named Carlos Rodriguez, the president and CEO of Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP), as the honorary degree recipient for its May 2017 Graduate School Commencement ceremony.

The Cuban-American business leader and philanthropist will deliver the keynote address and receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the event on May 22 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, N.J.

Montclair State University Professor Pankaj Lal Receives Prestigious Presidential Award

Montclair, NJ, February 1, 2017 — Pankaj Lal, associate professor of Earth and Environmental Studies and associate director of the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies at Montclair State University, is among 102 recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE)

Nine Colleges and Universities Establish the New Jersey Big Data Alliance

Data finger touchNew Brunswick, NJ, January 19, 2017 — Andrew Sheldon reports on NJBIZ that nine of the state’s top colleges and universities have signed a memorandum of agreement to formally establish the New Jersey Big Data Alliance (NJBDA).

The aim of the NJBDA is to bring together the diverse advanced cyberinfrastructure resources and talent housed at the state’s universities, colleges and NJEDge.Net, according to a news release.

Margaret Brennan-Tonetta, associate vice president for economic development at Rutgers and a founder of the NJBDA, said the agreement was a step toward making the Garden State a leader in an emerging field. Continue reading

NJ Senate Honors Montclair State University for Achieving Research Doctoral Carnegie Designation

Montclair State U squareMontclair, NJ, June 14, 2016 ― The 40 members of the Senate of the State of New Jersey on May 9 issued a resolution in which Montclair State University was recognized and honored for earning Research Doctoral University designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education for the first time.

The change in ranking was issued by Carnegie in January 2016, based on the substantial growth at Montclair State in doctoral-level education and research activity.  The University was previously recognized as a Master’s 1 University (Larger Programs). Continue reading
