At FDA, Drugs and Tweets Don’t Mix; Current 21st Century Cures Bill Does Not Update Pharma Marketing Regs

Washington, DC, June 8, 2015 ― Sarah Karlin reports in Politico that when it comes to communication, the U.S. House of Representatives’ 21st Century Cures Act is stuck in the 20th century.

The sweeping biomedical innovation bill aims to speed up development of medical treatments by taking advantage of the latest in science and technology.  But provisions meant to update the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations on drug advertising were dropped.

The FDA’s current marketing and promotion regulations don’t even mention the Internet.  They focus instead on brochures, file cards and, inexplicably, lantern slides — a mid-1800s invention that was supplanted decades ago. Continue reading

U.S. House’s ‘Cures 2015’ Legislation Seeks to Promote Research in Rare Diseases

Washington, DC, May 14, 2015 ― The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce’s bipartisan 21st Century Cures initiative continued this morning as the draft legislation was advanced through the Subcommittee on Health.

Bipartisan Leaders Release House’s ‘21st Century Cures’ Discussion Draft as Legislative Process Continues

Washington, DC, April 29, 2015 ― After nearly a year of listening to patients, innovators, researchers, providers, consumers, and regulators, bipartisan Energy and Commerce Committee leaders today released a discussion draft marking continued progress in the 21st Century Cures initiative.

Rep. Leonard Lance Hosts HINJ CEO on ‘Seventh District Congressional Report’

Washington, DC, April 8, 2015 HealthCare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ) President and CEO Dean Paranicas was a guest on Rep. Leonard Lance’s (R-7) “Seventh District Congressional Report,” which will be broadcast on various public broadcast stations in the coming days.

Rep. Lance and Paranicas focused on the life sciences’ impact on the state’s economy; the FDA Safety Over Sequestration (SOS) Act, which seeks to exempt FDA user fees from sequestration; and the 21st Century Cures initiative.
