Rutgers Now Among Top 25 Research Universities in U.S.

Princeton, NJ, July 2, 2013Choose New Jersey reports that, after merging the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) with Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, the new Rutgers now has 65,000 students and a $3 billion budget.

With an expanded focus on biotechnology and medical education, Rutgers is one of only two universities in the country with two medical schools and now has more research spending than Harvard, Yale or Northwestern.

The transformation reflects a statewide restructuring of higher education designed to broaden New Jersey’s public universities and make the state more competitive in scoring research grants.  Read more about the merger.

In addition, Rutgers also joined 15 top-tier research institutions comprising the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), a consortium that includes the Big Ten Conference universities and the University of Chicago, and together engage in $9.3 billion in funded research each year.
