President-Elect Trump to Nominate Rep. Tom Price to Serve as Health and Human Services Secretary

Rep. Tom Price

Rep. Tom Price

Washington, DC, November 29, 2016 — Robert Pear reports today in The New York Times that President-elect Donald J. Trump has picked Congressman Tom Price, a six-term Republican congressman from Georgia, to be Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Pear reports that if Mr. Trump’s wanted a cabinet secretary who could help him dismantle and replace President Obama’s health care law, the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare, he could not have found anyone more prepared than Rep. Price, who has been studying how to accomplish that goal for more than six years.

Congressman Price, an orthopedic surgeon who represents many of the northern suburbs of Atlanta, speaks with the self-assurance of a doctor about to perform another joint-replacement procedure.  He knows the task and will proceed with brisk efficiency.

While some Republicans have attacked the Affordable Care Act without proposing an alternative, Rep. Price, who serves as the chairman of the House Budget Committee, has introduced bills offering a detailed, comprehensive replacement plan in every Congress since 2009, when Democrats started work on the legislation.

Many of his ideas are included in the “Better Way” agenda issued several months ago by House Republicans.

In a statement released today by his office, Congressman Price said:

“It is an honor to be nominated to serve our nation as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Thanks to President-Elect Donald Trump and Vice President-Elect Mike Pence for their confidence.

“I am humbled by the incredible challenges that lay ahead and enthusiastic for the opportunity to be a part of solving them on behalf of the American people.  There is much work to be done to ensure we have a health care system that works for patients, families, and doctors; that leads the world in the cure and prevention of illness; and that is based on sensible rules to protect the well-being of the country while embracing its innovative spirit.

“The citizens of Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District have given me the privilege of representing them in Congress. I am so proud and grateful to live in and work on behalf of such a wonderful community and hope to continue serving our fellow citizens in this new role.”

According to his bio, posted on his House website, Dr. Price is an orthopaedic surgeon who has spent more than 20 years caring for patients in the metro Atlanta area, and helped found one of the largest private orthopaedic practices in the country.

Congressman Price is chairman of the Committee on the Budget in the House of Representatives.  He also serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, including the Subcommittee on Health.

Congressman Tom Price was first elected to represent Georgia’s 6th district in November 2004.  Prior to going to Washington, Price served four terms in the Georgia State Senate – two as Minority Whip.

In 2002, he was a leader in the Republican renaissance in Georgia as the party took control of the State Senate, with Price rising to become the first Republican Senate Majority Leader in the history of Georgia.

In Congress, Rep. Price has proven to be a vibrant leader, tireless problem solver and the go-to Republican on quality health care policy.  He serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means.

In the 114th Congress, Price was named Chair of the House Committee on the Budget.  In previous Congresses, he has served as Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee and Chairman of the Republican Study Committee.

Committed to advancing positive solutions under principled leadership, Price has been a fierce opponent of government waste and devoted to limited government and lower spending.

For nearly twenty years, Rep. Price worked in private practice as an orthopaedic surgeon.  Before coming to Washington he returned to Emory University School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor and Medical Director of the Orthopedic Clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, teaching resident doctors in training.

He received his Bachelor and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Michigan and completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Emory University.

Congressman Price and his wife, Elizabeth, reside in Roswell, GA.  They have one son.
