New Jersey EDA Has Given 54 Tech and Biotech Firms About $60 Million in Assistance

Trenton, NJ, December 6, 2013 ― The Star-Ledger’s Tom De Poto reports that New Jersey has awarded 54 tech and biotech companies about $1.1 million each through its Technology Business Tax Certificate Transfer program.

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority yesterday said since the program was established in 1999, about $770 million has been awarded to more than 490 companies.

The program lets companies sell tax losses or research and development tax credits for at least 80 percent of their value to raise cash to finance their growth and operations.

The awards this year represented a 21 percent increase over last year.

Of the 54 companies, 20 are located in Middlesex County, 11 in Mercer County, 10 in Bergen County and four in Somerset. The remainder were in Atlantic, Burlington, Hudson, Morris, Union and Warren counties.

EDA Chief Executive Officer Michele A. Brown said these companies “have been able to raise capital and build their businesses in New Jersey as a result of this innovative program. This is exactly the kind of vital support this sector needs.”
