Medical Device Group Launches Ad Campaign to Repeal Obamacare’s 2.3 Percent Excise Tax

Washington, DC, August 10, 2017 — Peter Sullivan reports in The Hill that the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) is launching a new advertising campaign to push lawmakers to repeal Obamacare’s tax on medical devices.

AdvaMed will be running the digital and social media ads in 15 states this month, pushing lawmakers to repeal the medical device tax when they return from recess in September.

“It’s time to protect innovation, it’s time to advance life-changing research, it’s time to permanently repeal the jobs-killing device tax!” the ads state.

Repealing the 2.3 percent tax on medical devices has found support on both sides of the aisle. It is part of a package of Obamacare fixes recently proposed by a bipartisan group of House lawmakers.

The medical device tax is not the only tax that groups are looking to find a way to repeal, now that the larger Obamacare repeal effort is stalled.

Health insurers are pushing to repeal the law’s health insurance tax and are pointing to a new study from the consulting firm Oliver Wyman that found the tax would increase premiums by 2.6 percent next year.

Congress previously delayed both the medical device tax and the health insurance tax, but both are slated to come back next January unless Congress acts.
