The New Jersey Life Sciences Vendors Alliance (NJLSVA) is a coalition of businesses, individuals and academia who provide goods and services to New Jersey’s life sciences companies.

The NJLSVA was founded to educate suppliers on trends in industry procurement and public policy that affects the life sciences industry.

NJIT Set for Return of TED Conference on September 12

Newark, NJ, August 29, 2013NJBIZ’s Mary Johnson reports that a group of scientists, students, artists and engineers will come together for the annual TEDxNJIT conference next month to preach the benefits of putting ideas both big and small into action.

The annual event, to be held September 12 at the Jim Wise Theatre at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), in Newark, is an independently organized offshoot of the international TED organization, which promotes “ideas worth spreading.” Continue reading

Rutgers Names Terri Goss Kinzy, Ph.D. Associate VP for Research Administration for Research and Economic Development

New Brunswick, NJ, August 28, 2013 — Rutgers has appointed Terri Goss Kinzy, Ph.D., professor in the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, as associate vice president for research administration in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development.

In this new position, she is responsible for the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, corporate contracts, and research operations, including IT, budgeting, communications, and personnel. Continue reading

Paul Brown Takes Over as Monmouth University President with a Global Vision

West Long Branch, NJ, August 23, 2013The Star-Ledger today reports that Paul Brown, the former dean of the business college at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, takes over Monmouth University with plans to bring a more global focus to the mid-size private university on the Jersey Shore.

Founded as a junior college in the 1930s to offer evening classes to cash-strapped local students, Monmouth has grown into a 6,500-student university on a picturesque campus less than two miles from the Atlantic Ocean.  Its student body is largely white and from New Jersey. Continue reading

NJ Spotlight to Host Conference on NJ Implementation of Affordable Care Act on September 20

Montclair, NJ, August 20, 2013NJ Spotlight will host a conference on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in New Jersey on Friday, September 20.  The free event will be held in The Metropolitan Room at the Newark Club, 1 Newark Center in Newark from 8:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 

Although the Affordable Care Act became law in March 2010, the two most important dates in its development have yet to be reached.  On October 1, 2013, New Jersey residents will be able to enroll for health coverage that will begin on January 1, 2014, through either the online health insurance marketplace or the newly expanded Medicaid program. New Resources Available to Help Consumers Navigate the Health Insurance Marketplace

Washington, DC, August 19, 2013 — Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on August 15 announced $67 million in grant awards to 105 Navigator grant applicants in Federally-facilitated and State Partnership Marketplaces.

These Navigator grantees and their staff will serve as an in-person resource for Americans who want additional assistance in shopping for and enrolling in plans in the Health Insurance Marketplace beginning this fall.

Also, HHS recognized more than 100 national organizations and businesses who have volunteered to help Americans learn about the health care coverage available in the Marketplace. Continue reading

How 11 States Attracted the Smartest Scientists, Research

Washington, DC, August 13, 2013The Washington Post reports that nations have long competed to lead the world in scientific achievement.  The United States, for example, now spends nearly 3 percent of its GDP on basic R&D.  But the benefits of public spending on research are also becoming clear at the state level.

A new paper published by the UC-Berkeley economist Enrico Moretti and Daniel Wilson of the San Francisco Federal Reserve finds that states that created tax or other incentives for the biotech industry over the last 20 years have experienced tremendous growth in the number of “star” scientists inhabiting those states. SBA Pushes Small Businesses to Compete for Sandy-Related Contract Work

Newark, NJ, August 8, 2013 — Stacy Jones reports in The Star-Ledger that the last time Karen Mills, administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, made a public appearance in New Jersey she was touring a Jersey City spa that took on 6 feet of water during Hurricane Sandy and urging people to apply for the SBA’s disaster loans.

Mills’ return yesterday, at a contracting matchmaking event hosted by the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), kicked off an SBA-wide push to get small businesses off the bench and competing for recovery-related contract work with government agencies and private corporations.
